The round Target would require a long & most exquisite consideration because it is of circular forme, most capable, and most perfect of all others.
Giacomo di Grassi
Usually made of steel and with a diameter of, on average, around 24 inches and weighing anything up to 9lb, the round shield, buckler, rondella or target was devastatingly effective as both a defensive and offensive weapon and was still being used to great effect (especially by the Spanish 'Sword-and-Buckler men') on the battlefields of sixteenth century Europe.
